Baby on Board: How to Successfully Transport Your Baby Using Public Transportation

The bus isn't just for big city dwellers anymore. In these difficult economic times, more and more people are finding themselves taking public transportation in order to save money in gas, time spent driving in congested highway traffic or both. With this increase in numbers also comes a shift in the types of people who are becoming more apt to ride the bus every day rather than driving their own car. No longer is public transportation just for men and women working the early morning shift or those dressed in business suits, talking on cell phones and carrying large cups of coffee. The bus is now for everyone, babies included.

Taking a baby on a bus is serious business. As a parent, you have to ensure your child's safety while riding as well as providing for their overall comfort during your trip. A lot of parents are too intimidated by the thought of taking their young child with them on public transportation that they usually opt for either driving themselves or walking. But, riding the bus with a baby should be embraced rather than feared. With a few helpful hints, you and your baby can be comfortably riding your local public transit in no time!

Public Transportation Compatible Modes of Baby Transport:

Baby Slings-This is probably the easiest way of carrying your baby while riding the bus. With your baby tucked securely at your chest, your hands will be free to hold railings and pay bus fares with ease and comfort. A lot of parents say that their children tend to fall asleep easily and quickly while in a sling but, every child is different. Make sure that you test putting your child in the carrier before riding the bus for the first time. You do not want to try something new with your child on the same morning that you will be trying to figure out bus maps and destination arrival times.

Baby Strollers-Taking a stroller on a bus can be a bit tricky depending on size of the stroller, foldability and the city in which you live. Some cities do not allow baby strollers on public transportation system so make sure that you call ahead and find out your city's regulations. Baby strollers can be beneficial if you plan to walk for long distances once you have exited the bus but, they can also create a strain on the parent as well. You will have to worry about carrying your child on and off of the bus as well as folding and unfolding the stroller multiple times during your trip. Make sure that your stroller model is both lightweight and easy manipulated prior to taking your child anywhere on public transit.

Carrying Baby in Your Arms-This might seem like the simplest method of transporting your child safely and comfortably but, there are some things that you will need to consider before boarding the bus. By carrying your child, you can expect your arms and back to get extremely fatigued. Exchanging money or bus tickets may also be difficult with a baby in your arms at all times. Also if there is an accident while you are riding, your baby will be as safe as he/she could be if they were traveling in a compact seat with safety harnesses attached.

But, whatever method you choose to transport your baby, know that the bus is a safe and viable mode of transportation and that having a child should not stop you from taking full advantage of the public services that your city provides for all its residents.
