Our second child is a big little dude. We needed strollers for big kids. At the age of three he was pushing 50 pounds and 36 plus inches tall. But he was still a little guy and his little legs, though larger than other kids, still get tired at about the same amount of walking as any other 3 year old. And at that age, lets face the don't have the mental energy or the physical energy to go all day long. They need a break, and at three, lots of kids still need a nap.
What does this have to do with a stroller? Well, we spend a lot of time out of the house. Whether it's the mall, everyday shopping, nature trails or amusement parks, the fact is we are not at home with our kids all that much.
And when we are out, we are active, not necessarily just in the car or in the mall. Often times, we will be out either walk or bike most of the day. We take a lot of mini vacations and that means we are always on the go.
Some people look at our little dude and think he should be able to walk all day without needing a stroller. These people of course are the judgmental types that have little else to do. But the fact is with out level of activity, I expect our children to occasionally use a stroller for big kids possibly until well past 4 years old.
Our 5 and a half year old for example is off and riding her bicycle. She will have nothing to do with a stroller anymore, large or small. There are times however, if we are biking all day long that I will tell her that she needs to riding in the bike trailer, which is essentially a big low safe stroller for kids you pull behind your bike.
There a couple of ways you can can about getting the one that suits you, but the thing I'm trying to impart is don't be afraid to let you little one ride in the stroller when they are tired. And remember, what other people think, usually childless, should not affect your parenting decisions.
At the end of the day we purchased a jogging stroller to do the job. They are larger, have a heavier frame and can also, obviously, be used for jogging. That's a real bonus for me, I like to jog with my kids. A bike trailer will also work and can also perform two functions.
