Chinese antiques have risen dramatically in the last few years. There are some good reasons for this.
Firstly the quality of the antiques. Antique Chinese porcelain is of very high quality. It took many years to perfect techniques that achieved this quality and then craftsmen would take many years to become skilled at their craft.
Secondly the scarcity of the antiques should be remembered. Some antiques that have produced high prices have been extremely rare. This is not surprising when we remember how old some of them are. Items of quality produced in the Ming dynasty are more than five hundred years old. Antiques from any country that are this old are going to be very rare and the price is going to be very high. Because they are so old there is a good chance that if they have survived for hundreds of years, there will be some damage, especially porcelain and fragile items such as this.
So if you are lucky enough to own some Chinese porcelain that is five hundred years old, you would expect it to at least have some small cracks or damage. If you have something in near perfect condition, that would really be amazing and you would expect it to be worth a lot of money.
This brings us on to my next point. Most items that are five hundred years old of good quality from any country will be worth a great deal, if we think of China at the moment with its economic renaissance and the number of millionaires (and even billionaires) increasing almost daily, then it is not difficult to see why Chinese antiques are becoming so valuable. When there is a very scarce item and you have two or more keen bidders at an auction bidding for it who are very wealthy then the sky really is the limit as far as value is concerned.
This brings me on to the main question of this article. Are prices going to keep rising?
Well it looks as if China is going to keep growing in economic importance and is fast catching up with other major economies, and may well overtake some of them. Although I am no expert I think that with the growing economic importance of China and the increasing wealth of its people rare antique items will probably always remain very high
