Fine Art - Defining Art In The World Of Antiques

Are you thinking what is Fine Art? How is it defined, what it means to you may be different to others. Oh dear I've just looked on Google for the definition, there are so many the mind boggles, but here are a few, which point to some of my favourites:

  • Art, the product of human creativity; works of art collectively; "an art exhibition"; or "a fine collection of art".
  • It also describes a form developed primarily for aesthetics and/or concept rather than utility. Today this would include visual and performing art forms such as painting, sculpture, music, dance, theatre, architecture, photography and printmaking.
  • An exact skill that needs practice to perfect; The singular form of fine arts.
  • Works made to be enjoyed, not functional, and judged by the theories of art.
  • Art created for purely aesthetic expression, communication or contemplation. Painting and Sculpture are the best known.
  • The visual Arts which include painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture and some performance art. Excludes other art forms such as poetry, literature, dance and music.

There are lots more to contemplate, but I think this is enough to give us food for thought so to speak! My definition is; anything visually artistic that is easy on the eye and provides an artistic enjoyment, could possibly be classed as Fine Art.

Think about it yourself, what do you feel it is that defines your idea of Fine Art it can be such a personal thing but that is the antiques world what appeals to some may not appeal to others.
