What is colic?
Colic is a natural condition that occurs to many babies and each parent has to know how to deal with it. Usually you will see that babies start to cry and no visible reason can be spotted. If this is the case then you should know that you are dealing with colic. Colic usually appears to babies between the ages of 2 weeks and 4 months. It usually disappears after this age. But there were also cases when colic lasted longer even up to 6-8 months. The reasons why colic appears is because the digestive system of a baby is not yet entirely formed and after meals, babies can sense some kind of discomfort that is known as the generic term of colic.
Dealing with colic
If your baby wakes up in the middle of the night crying then you must know how to deal with colic. There are certain home remedies that can help you deal with this problem at any hour of the night. The first thing you need to do is to keep the baby relaxed at all times. You must rock him, carry him and give him the pacifier. Some calming music can also help.
Another thing that can help you deal with colic is giving your baby a calming tummy rub. By rubbing the tummy in a circular way you have a good chance of releasing the pressure. If you want extra efficiency to this massage you can add castor oil. This will calm the pain instantly. You can find out massage techniques from many different books and there are even many tutorials online that can help you sooth your baby's pain.
There are other home remedies that have proven to help many parents deal with colic. One of them is herbal tea. There are many plants that can help relieve the pain. You can choose from chamomile, ginger, peppermint or catnip. Give the tea to your baby at least 3 times a day and he will sleep better at night. This way you can make sure that the pain will be gone and your little bundle of joy won't wake up in the middle of the night crying and in terrible pain.
There is another way that you can prevent colic. As mentioned before, colic is a condition that appears whenever the gas accumulates. So it's very important that you burp the baby after each meal. This way you will prevent all gases to build up and colic to form. The best way to treat colic is to prevent it rather than taking action when the baby is already in pain.
Dealing with colic can be sometimes hard especially for new parents. You don't have to panic if your baby wakes up in the middle of the night crying because now you know what you have to do. Follow these simple rules and you can both treat and prevent colic. Hopefully you and your baby will have a good night sleep.
